Acupuncture

At White Dragon Chinese Medicine we specialise in Acupuncture to treat pain & health conditions. Benefits of acupuncture can include: drug-free pain relief, can be effective in the treatment of acute and chronic ailments (as shown in research studies which have been collated in the Acupuncture Evidence Project). It takes a holistic approach by addressing the underlying cause of the condition, as well as the symptoms.

The approach links body, mind and emotions. Acupuncture can also assist in prevention against disease and the maintenance of general wellbeing.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Looking for plump, youthful skin without all the toxic chemicals? Cosmetic acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. Using points on the face and body this technique corrects the signs of ageing and addresses underlying health concerns. It has a semi-permanent effect on wrinkles, sagging skin, acne scarring, sun damage and pigmentation.  Used in conjunction with a relaxing mask and natural products this treatment will greatly improve your skins appearance.

Cupping

What is cupping? Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin which create a suction. This vacuum effect gently draws in to increase circulation and draw blood to the area. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, increase blood flow, detoxification, relaxation and wellbeing.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

In conjunction with acupuncture treatments, herbs may be prescribed if appropriate to the patient’s condition. Chinese herbal medicine takes a holistic approach to disease focusing as much on prevention of illness as the treatment of it. Chinese herbs are tailored for the individuals needs, treating the root of the symptoms not only for relief of symptoms.

Chinese herbs can be incredibly helpful in treating a very wide variety of conditions and may extend the effects of an acupuncture treatment. Chinese herbs are very safe to take as long as they’re prescribed by an experienced practitioner with adequate experience. In modern practice, there are over 450 different substances commonly used in herbal formulae; most of which are of plant origin.

The herbs we give are typically either in pill form or powdered to be dissolved in warm water. No endangered species or unethical products are ever used in our clinic, and we only give our patients products that are approved by the TGA.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means “acupuncture-moxibustion.” The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Here is a very brief and simple answer to a very complex (yet simple) form of medicine.

Thin needles are inserted into the body, which solicits many physiological responses that have proven to be helpful in pain management and promotes the healing process. Needles inserted into specific acupuncture points are known to regulate the nervous, hormonal and immune systems. The needles will also stimulate and promote organ and system functions. This is healing from the inside out.

The practitioner may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, including moxibustion, cupping, laser therapy, electro-stimulation and massage, in order to promote a similar response.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture should be painless, although some people experience a slight sharp sensation depending on how sensitive they are and where the needles are inserted. Acupuncture needles are solid needles, not hollow like hypodermic needles, and they are much, much thinner – about the diameter of a thick human hair. Once the needle is in place, it’s normal to initially feel a tingling or dull sensation, numbness, mild pressure or warmth for a few seconds before the feeling disappears. After the needles are inserted, the overwhelming sensation of relaxation takes over and you do not even feel the needles in the body.

Do I have to get naked?

No. Most of the time, the main needle-insertion points are on the lower legs, ears or arms, so wearing loose-fitting clothing is fine. Similar to medical doctors, sometimes an acupuncturist will ask you to disrobe and drape with a towel if work on your back, hips, upper legs or torso.

Is Acupuncture covered by Private Health Insurance?

Yes. This is of course dependent on your insurance policy.

How is Herbal Medicine used?

In conjunction with acupuncture treatments, herbs may be prescribed if appropriate to the patient’s condition. Unlike conventional pharmaceuticals, Eastern herbs are tailored for the individual’s needs, treating the root of the symptoms not only for relief of symptoms. Compared to Western medicine, herbs are much gentler and safer for they are made in nature and most don’t cause side effects. Herbal Medicine itself is a powerful method of healing and it can function in a number of different ways such as killing viruses’ and bacteria, preventing disease, increasing energy and slowing down the aging process. Herbal Medicine is a gentle but effective way to achieve a complete body recovery.
